Until today, there have been serious problems created by flooding. The prioritization of solutions was based primarily on the size of the problems that appear. Z&A through this study, developed flood management models which will provide a convenient tool for prioritization in particular as regards access to funding from E.U. resources. The project included the following: (a) selection of important streams to be included in the management plan, (b) appropriate mapping of relevant catchments, (c) description of the necessary studies for each stream (flood plain, hydraulic studies, etc). Registration of flood protection works or/and settlement in obstructing of streams and (d) proposals on necessary land use changes to achieve the flood protection goals. The projects that were supervised by Z&A were the following:1. “Stabilization of natural slopes and arrangement of river bed of Pamisos stream in Mouzaki Municipality, Karditsa Perfecture”, 2. “Arrangement works on Saint George stream of Dramiziotis river in Trikala Prefecture” 3. “Recreation and environmental protection of Dipotamia river in Kastoria Prefecture” 4. “Arrangement works on Baggo stream of Anthiriotis river in Karditsa Prefecture” 5. “Flood protection works on river Asopos in East Attica Prefecture”.

RFP

Soil loss using RUSLE from the Kotychi basin was estimated using GIS software resulting in a spatial representation which enabled targeting of particular streams and areas of high contribution to the lagoon's sedimentation problem. The targeting of areas informed the design of specific hydraulic works to allow the diversion of freshwater into the lagoon during low flows while at the same time diverting away sediment-laden floodwaters during the rainy season. This arrangement helps in the management of the lagoon's salinity levels and at the same time provides relief from excessive sedimentation.

EOI

The main objective was to protect the lagoon from sedimentation. Soil loss using RUSLE from the Kotychi basin was estimated using GIS software resulting in a spatial representation defining areas of high contribution to the lagoon's sedimentation problem. Specific hydraulic works were designed to allow the diversion of freshwater into the lagoon during low flows while at the same time diverting away sediment-laden floodwaters during the rainy season.

Part C: "Environmental Issues" where the environmental impacts of the Acheloos diversion were analysed and Part D: "Management Model", where a water management model was configured and calibrated and used to assess the water resource system under different scenarios of water use. The project aims at integrated water resources management of the area of interest and the development of the appropriate management tools. It was elaborated in order to assist the Ministry of Public Works in the implementation of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60). RFP

The scope of the project is the management of the water resources of the Nestos River catchment. The target is to transfer and distribute irrigation water using the available surface waters and protect the underground resources. The WRM study collected all the available water data to establish the water balance of Nestos river catchment and determine the available quantities for irrigation, hydropower generation and environmental flow requirements. The feasibility study involved a total area of more than 100,000 ha and included also the feasibility design of four dams. Following the above proposals, the Ministry assigned the preliminary design of the water supply and distribution network for the irrigation of Xanthi plain from Nestos river. The total length of the water supply system was approximately 155 km with diameters from D2000 to D400. The area under study was approximately 30,500 ha. Following the preliminary design for the total network of the Xanthi plain irrigation scheme, the Ministry assigned the detailed design of the water supply system for the irrigation of approximately 5,730 ha. The distribution network was also designed.

EOI

The scope of the project is the management of the ground water in the valleys of Ksanthi and Komotini by using the water from Nestos River. All required quantities for irrigation, hydropower and environmental flow were estimated.
