For this reason the Department of Water Development promoted the construction of Units Seawater Desalination in order to make the supply independent of rainfall of drinking water in large urban and tourist centers. The Decelia Desalination Plant was the first plant to be built and operated in 1997, with an initial production capacity of 40,000 m\u00b3 of water per day. Its current total capacity is 60,000 m\u00b3 of water the day. To deal with the insufficient storage capacity, new reservoirs on the hill of Kokkinokremmos will be constructed with a total capacity of 35,000m\u00b3.The water supplied areas are supplied through the central pipeline Choirokotias &#8211; Fama-gusta. The pipeline along its longest length is constructed from asbestos cement pipes with diameters of 600 and 650mm while at the height of the Achnas dam there is a small section of the pipeline made of ductile iron pipes di-ameter 700mm. In order to address the operational problems of the pipeline mainly due to its old age, a new water transport pipeline is proposed (TOTAL LENGTH 24.600 m, D.I., DN 900 &#8211; 1100) and a pumping station (Q=3394m3\/h &#8211; Hman=155m), which will connect the Dekelia Desalination Unit with the Tanks at Kokkinokremos.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0The prolonged drought observed in Cyprus in the last twenty years has resulting in insufficient water storage in the dams that have been constructed.
