The Nampula dam situated on the Monapo River approximately 15 km north from the center of the city. The Main Characteristics of the Nampula Dam are:
Type of dam: Concrete gravity, Construction period: 1957-1959, Gross storage capacity: 3.8 hm3, Spillway type: Free, with Creager sill, Bottom outlet:Φ 60 cm (disabled), located at elevation 317 m, Dam height: 25.5 m, Spillway length: 133 m
The Nampula dam is the main water source for the city of Nampula. It was partly rehabilitated in 1978-79 and again in 2004, mostly focusing on drainage and percolation. Later inspections have shown that these interventions were not very effective, and thus leakage into the drainage gallery was excessive, while the groundwater pressures act-ing at the base of the dam are unknown. Today there is no monitoring, no emergency plan, and the dam needs re-habilitation
As per Terms of Reference (ToR), the Project’s Scope of Work is to:
1.Review and update the previous studies of the safety assessment of the Nampula dam;
2.Prepare a Feasibility Study (FS) for the Project’s rehabilitation/upgrading, considering different options. This scope includes: (a) an Investigation Plan and Technical Specifications, (b) the analysis and interpretation of the results of the investigations, (c) Design Criteria Report, (d) Hydrology and Hydraulics Report, (e) Report on Stability and structural analyses, (f) Report on Potential Failure Mode Analysis (PFMA), (g) Report on Reservoir Sedimentation Analysis, (h) Basic Design of alternatives for the Project’s rehabilitation/upgrading, (i) Multicriteria Analysis Report, and (j) Feasibility Study of the preferred option.
3.Prepare Detailed Design (DD) and Tender Documents for the preferred option for the rehabilitation/upgrading of the Nampula dam;
4.Develop a comprehensive Dam Safety Management Plan (DSMP) for the dam in compliance with Mozambican laws and dam safety regulations, the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) World Bank Good Practice note on dam safety, Good International Industry Practice (GIIP), and relevant WBG Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines (EHSGs).
The service covers the field of:
