The services included under this project are Feasibility and Tender Design Studies for the Nyimur Multipurpose Water Resources Project located in the Aswa River basin shared between Uganda and South Sudan. The project comprises a community based irrigation scheme, water reservoir, a water and soil conservation component among other enabling sub components. It will establish a water resources information/knowledge base and institutional development of the target project area. The core scheme of the project consists of a 26 m head dam and reservoir on Nyimur River and five (5) modules of irrigated lowland rice of approximately 5,105 ha. A mini hydropower plant with a capacity of 350 kW is included in the dam component. In addition, it includes the establishment, in the sub-catchments, of areas where Sustainable Land use Management is practiced as well as afforestation activities for an estimated at 14,300 ha. It envisages assessment of the likely feasibility and benefits from a technical, economic, financial, environment, social, and institutional perspectives, as well as consideration of alternative financing options.

The project’s objective was tthe identification of a Multipurpose Water Resources Management and Development project to improve water, food and energy security, to reduce flow variability and flood damage and to contribute towards improved livelihoods without compromising the environment. The main study outputs were an identification study report upon which detailed preparation and investment would be based. The specific objectives of the assignment were: a) to identify potential regional investment options, taking into account their economic, social and environmental implications as well as cumulative impacts, b) to investigate the alignment of potential regional investment options with national level priorities and plans, c) to prioritize and sequence potential investments, also in light of existing and planned interventions up to 2035 and d) to prepare an investment project that falls within the National Planning Frameworks of Uganda and Southern Sudan. In order to achieve these objectives the Consultant delivered a Situational Analysis Report, a Multipurpose Basin Water Resources Development and Management Strategy Plan, an Investment Plan and, finally a report identifying a Bankable Investment Project among the initially evaluated alternatives.
