The project scope consists of engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning of a standalone system that will supply potable water to the City of Lilongwe and its surrounds. The major project components, are listed as follows:
- Intake works, 532 m from shore into Lake Malawi with an abstraction capacity of 4772.7 m3/hour (105,000 m3/d).
- Onshore raw water pumping station, pumping through two DN 800 mm DI pipe, 710m, with a capacity of 4772.7 m3/hour.
- Water Treatment Works through pressure filters with an overall plant capacity of 4166.7 m3/hr..
- Lifuwu clear water tank with a capacity of 8000m3 (2x 4000m3).
- Transmission pipeline (Lifuwu to Katengeza): treated water will be conveyed through a DN 1200mm Mild Steel Pipe (46.15 km) with a minor section (3.25 km) of class 40 pipe from Lifuwu clear water tank (Sump) to Katengeza clear water tank a total length of 49.40 km. This pipeline will supply a flow of 4545.45 m3/hr.
- Katengeza clear water tank with a capacity of 10 000m3 (2x 5000m3)
- Pumping main (Katengeza to Mvera), treated water will be conveyed through a DN 1200mm Mild Steel Pipe from Katengeza clear water tank (Sump) to Mvera clear water tank a total length of 12.72 km.
- Clear water tank (8 000m3) and Pumping Station
- Clear water pumping main from Mvera to Dowa turnoff:
- Dowa turn off, 8 000 m3; there will be 2x 4000m3 clear water tanks.
- Gravity main, water will be conveyed by gravity from Dowa turn off reservoirs to existing Kanengo reser-voirs Mild Steel Pipe , a total length of 36.90 km.
- ESCOM power supply and standby power supply in the form of diesel generators for all the pump stations, water treatment and the abstraction works.
- SCADA system for the control and monitoring of the water supply system
