Detailed design of works necessary for the environmental protection of kotychi lagoon, elia prefecture, peloponesse, south greece

Soil loss using RUSLE from the Kotychi basin was estimated using GIS software resulting in a spatial representation which enabled targeting of particular streams and areas of high contribution to the lagoon’s sedimentation problem. The targeting of areas informed the design of specific hydraulic works to allow the diversion of freshwater into the lagoon during low flows while at the same time diverting away sediment-laden floodwaters during the rainy season. This arrangement helps in the management of the lagoon’s salinity levels and at the same time provides relief from excessive sedimentation.
The main objective was to protect the lagoon from sedimentation. Soil loss using RUSLE from the Kotychi basin was estimated using GIS software resulting in a spatial representation defining areas of high contribution to the lagoon’s sedimentation problem. Specific hydraulic works were designed to allow the diversion of freshwater into the lagoon during low flows while at the same time diverting away sediment-laden floodwaters during the rainy season.
