The contract signed included the study of flood control works downstream of the Corinth-Patras road axis, for the three streams Kolones (Total length 850m), Arachovitiko (Total length 950m), and Tholopotamos (Total length 350m).
The study is the Final Hydraulic Study for the realignment works of the Arachovitiko stream (Chainage 36+454.53) from Ch. 0+000 (sea) to Ch. 1+035.43, as indicated in the plans, downstream of the road axis and the New Railway line. For the existing culverts of the old National Highway and New Raiway line (Ch.0+260 and 1+035.43 respec-tively), a hydraulic capacity check has been conducted as part of this study. The results indicate that no interven-tions are required for the passage of the design provisions.
The Arachovitiko stream downstream of the new Railway line culvert extends for a length of 1.035 km, featuring a main channel with a trapezoidal cross-section, of limited bottom width, and of variable depth. The cross sections of the stream downstream of the old National Highway appear to be concrete lined. Along the banks, the grounds al-ternate from mainly cultivated to terrestrial areas, with several properties with elevated courtyards and retaining walls.
Within the framework of the geotechnical study, stability analyses were conducted for both permanent and tempo-rary banks formed in the stream, taking into account the geotechnical design profile.
In Every section Z&A proposed and designed structures to prevent flooding events. A category C30/37 of concrete, and a B500c reinforcement will be used for the construction of all culverts and rectangular open channels, both up-stream and downstream. Gabion works on the banks and the bottom of the stream, are foreseen with the use of wire-boxes with diaphragms every 1m, filled with stones of 100-200mm diameter and an average diameter of d50 = 0.15m. The stones are recommended to be of calcareous origin
