Hrakleio is a city located in Crete island with a population of 305,000 people. DEYAI is the public (municipal) organization responsible for the water distribution and the sewerage networks of the greater Iraklio area. The main task of the project was the improvement of the financial and operational performance of the organization, especially concerning the department of the organization that is responsible for the water distribution networks. Detailed analysis and technical assistance were provided in terms of improving the management and business administration of DEYAI including advanced organization charts, implementation of new technology, human resources reformations, financial plans etc. Also technical assistance was provided including diagnostic assessment of the water distribution network, development of a full GIS with all the appropriate databases and development of detailed hydraulic models for the entire network. Finally technical assistance was provided concerning the adaptation of new technologies (new software and hardware, pipe detectors, leakage control instruments, SCADA systems, etc.) for improving the operation and control of the water distribution networks, including all the appropriate training of the employees.
