HPP Makrochori II is planned to be constructed on the downstream edge of river Aliakmonas outlet of the existing irrigation canal A0 and is planned to produce electricity when there is no irrigation demand (e.g. in winter months). The existing outlet lies near the village Rapsomaniki. For this project, necessary licenses for production were already obtained. The project was executed in two phases. The first phase included the preparation of preliminary studies for civil and electromechanological works and the second phase (after the Client’s approval) contained the preparation of the detailed design study of the total project. The project was tendered.

The project involved the technical evaluation of the design and operation of the small hydropower plant “Argyri”. The evaluation included a review of the hydrology of the basin, the review of the geological and geotechnical parameters of the project, the review of the hydraulic design of the intake facilities and the evaluation of the installed electro-mechanical equipment, including gates, control boards, the turbine and generator complex and the associated facilities. It was found that the plant was generally well designed and built, apart from several intake design inefficiencies which caused unnecessary delays and stop-downs, especially during times of crucial peak load operations. The study resulted in a number of proposals to improve the plant operation, mainly through structural improvements of the intake works.

Contract Value: 2,364,846.00€

The scope of the project consisted of the preliminary and detailed design of the water drainage system of the new single railway line connecting the commercial port of Kavala city to the existing railway line from Thessaloniki to Alexandroupoli, near the Toxotes area in Xanthi prefecture. Furthermore it included the service road drainage system along with the flood protection system from surrounding catchment areas with the necessary hydraulic structures (ditches, culverts, etc). The contract also involved the restoration of the existing irrigation networks. The project was divided into two parts. The first part involved the preliminary design of the water drainage system of the new single railway line(14,4Km).The second part involved the drainage system of the new single railway line(17.4Km).The new single railway line was designed parallel nearby the existing highway Egnatia so that most of the constructed culverts were designed to be extended to the railway line and be checked for design capacity.Three railway bridges were designed in preliminary stage over the Asprohomatos stream, the Xiropotamos stream and Nestos River that were checked for the design flow of T=100 yrs.

The Acharnon (Kanapitsa) stream collects the runoff from the southern part of Parnitha mountain, the western part of the Thrakomakedones region and the eastern part of Menidi district (total area of the basin: 16,3 Km²). It flows from north to south and outflows into the main river of Kifisos immediately south of the Kokkinos Mylos Cemetery. The study concerns the design of Kanapitsa stream relining works that will allow the stream to serve as the main floodwater collector of the area, enabling its effective stormwater drainageThe performed activities included all required surveys (topographical, geotechnical, geological, socioeconomic etc), the preparation of preliminary and detailed design of all the required works and the preparation of the Environmental and socio impact study.

Country: Greece
Client: Region Unit of Larisa
Year: 2010 - 2012
Funding: National Funds
Contract Value: 230,138.00 € (319,891 .00 USD)

The scope of this study was the recording of the technical data, the necessary tasks and the required field work to understand the behavior of the carstic system on Titarisios and Pineios Rivers, and the development of a mathematical model for the system. The overall study area included the semi-crystallic limestones in Damasi and Tyrnavos areas and on river Titarisios region, together with the Elassona and Potamia basins, and the river Pineios. The total area of the study was 300 km². This hydrogeological study aimed at: 1) To estimate the quantitative and qualitative water balance of the region under study,2) To inform the sustainable use of surface water and groundwater for irrigation of agricultural land, water supply to settlements and other uses 3) To calculate the available quantities from aquifers throughout the year, without causing adverse impacts on them, 4) To formulate the relationship of surface – groundwater and the most environmental way of exploitation 5) To formulate specific proposals for the enrichment of groundwater aquifers from surface waters.

Installation of a monitoring system & evaluation of the environmental status of rivers louros & arachthos and the amvrakikos golf, west greece

Country: Greece
Client: Arta Prefecture Authority
Year: 2009 - 2010
Funding: National Funds
Contract Value: 909,983.19 € (1,338,210.00 USD)

The main objective of the assignment was to inerprete and combine aerial photography coverage of the area of the catchments basins of Louros and Arachthos rivers which drain into Amvrakikos Gulf (dating back to 1945) and current high resolution satellite imagery to create a number of thematic maps showing the changes effected over time by urban and agricultural development. Changes over time were mapped for river courses, river beds, wetland areas and riparian areas along the Louros and Arachthos rivers and for the lagoons formed on the northern shores of Amvrakikos Gulf. Historical aerial photographs were scanned and assembled into a seamless mosaic, georeferenced to the current Greek projection system and datum. From this background, important elements of the river environment were digitized (banks, riparian areas, flood plains, etc.) and stored into a GIS system. The same elements were digitized from current high resolution satellite imagery of the area and the two data sets were compared using the GIS. Important metrics such as differences in floodplain areas, riparian extent, lagoon coverage etc. were calculated from superposition of the two different datasets thus quantifying the physical changes in the river environment over time.
