The project examined the impacts of the proposed Avlaki hydro scheme in the Acheloos river water management plan. The river basin management plan for Acheloos had been implemented previously and a water management and allocation model was set up for the water users of the catchment. The project focused in the incorporation of the Avlaki scheme into the existing model and scenario simulations to determine the energy production of the scheme, along with the fulfillment of other existing and projected water uses upstream and downstream of the scheme in the Acheloos river basin.

The object of this study was the preliminary engineering design of a Hydroelectric Power Project (HPP), with a 10 m high dam on Arkoudorema stream, in the Prefecture of Drama, Municipality of Paranesti in East Macedonia, Greece. This preliminary design study included the following parts: 1) Hydrological study of Arkoudorema river basin of about 249 km², 2) Geological study, where the stromatography of the project area was determined, 3) Energy production study, 4) Hydraulic works design study, which contained the preliminary design of the HPP and consisted of partially or totally visible (surface) works (intake structure, settling basin and forebay tank, by-pass channel, power house and draft tubes) and underground works (power tunnel and surge tank and penstock),5) Preliminary Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (PESIA).

The objective of the study was to explore the possibilities in developing Hydropower Plant projects inside the National Park in North Pindos, an area of important natural habitat value and significant wildlife. Although the presence of valuable natural habitats and ecosystems per se is not a criterion for exclusion of HPP installation (except within the area of priority habitats, which are excluded), they were taken into account where appropriate in the subsequent proposals. It is noted that the reported number of projects included existing authorisations and licence applications. Also none of the existing licences and licence applications and the new proposed projects has an installed power capacity larger than 5 MW.

Detailed hydraulic, structural & environmental design & tender documents of intake & a main pumping station on pineios river, larissa prefecture

Country: Greece
Client: Larisa Prefecture Authority
Year: 2008 - 2008
Funding: National Funds
Contract Value: 30,000.00€

The purpose of this project was the design of a very sophisticated intake at the right embankment to avoid the construction of a weir inside the river which would definetely create flooding problems upstream. Basically the intake consisted of a filter system to avoid sediments entering the pipe. From the intake, the water flow to the main pumping station designed by the Consultant and from there to the main irrigation reservoir. The proposed solution, simple in construction and with low cost, was be used as a pilot case for similar projects in the region.

The main objective of the service was to support the Special Water Secretary (SWS) of the Ministry for the Environment in the implementation of the Water Directive 60/2000 (WFD). The institutional strengthening of the Department was one of the main objectives since it was newly established with staff coming from departments not entirely relevant with that scope. The project was implemented for the whole of the Greek territory.
