Year: 2010 - 2011
Funding: International Development Association (IDA)
Contract Value: 495,000.00 €(668,250.00 US$)

The Natural Resource Management (NRM) Project on Kenya had four main components: Water Resource Management and Irrigation, Management of Forest Resources, Livelihood Investment in the Upper Tana Catchment and Management, Monitoring and Evaluation. Each of the three statutory institutions implemented a specific aspect of the whole component. A national project coordination office (NPCO) located in the Ministry of Water and Irrigation was responsible for the overall coordination of the implementation of project activities. The area under study was approximately 10,000 km². Flow and sediment monitoring in about 20 rivers in the catchment was in the scope of the contract with parallel training of the WRMA staff. Bathymetric surveys in 4 reservoirs were contacted (Masinga, Kamburu, Ndakaini and Sasumua) and a soil erosion model for all the catchment was developed and run. The design of a monitoring network for all the catchment was performed both for meteorological, hydro geological and hydrological data. A pre-feasibility study of approximately 100 dual purpose dam locations was conducted and 30 locations were selected for further study.

Installation of a monitoring system & evaluation of the environmental status of rivers louros & arachthos and the amvrakikos golf, west greece

Country: Greece
Client: Arta Prefecture Authority
Year: 2009 - 2010
Funding: National Funds
Contract Value: 909,983.19 € (1,338,210.00 USD)

The main objective of the assignment was to inerprete and combine aerial photography coverage of the area of the catchments basins of Louros and Arachthos rivers which drain into Amvrakikos Gulf (dating back to 1945) and current high resolution satellite imagery to create a number of thematic maps showing the changes effected over time by urban and agricultural development. Changes over time were mapped for river courses, river beds, wetland areas and riparian areas along the Louros and Arachthos rivers and for the lagoons formed on the northern shores of Amvrakikos Gulf. Historical aerial photographs were scanned and assembled into a seamless mosaic, georeferenced to the current Greek projection system and datum. From this background, important elements of the river environment were digitized (banks, riparian areas, flood plains, etc.) and stored into a GIS system. The same elements were digitized from current high resolution satellite imagery of the area and the two data sets were compared using the GIS. Important metrics such as differences in floodplain areas, riparian extent, lagoon coverage etc. were calculated from superposition of the two different datasets thus quantifying the physical changes in the river environment over time.

The objective of the study was to explore the possibilities in developing Hydropower Plant projects inside the National Park in North Pindos, an area of important natural habitat value and significant wildlife. Although the presence of valuable natural habitats and ecosystems per se is not a criterion for exclusion of HPP installation (except within the area of priority habitats, which are excluded), they were taken into account where appropriate in the subsequent proposals. It is noted that the reported number of projects included existing authorisations and licence applications. Also none of the existing licences and licence applications and the new proposed projects has an installed power capacity larger than 5 MW.

Contract Value: 30,000.00€

The purpose of this project was the design of a very sophisticated intake at the right embankment to avoid the construction of a weir inside the river which would definetely create flooding problems upstream. Basically the intake consisted of a filter system to avoid sediments entering the pipe. From the intake, the water flow to the main pumping station designed by the Consultant and from there to the main irrigation reservoir. The proposed solution, simple in construction and with low cost, was be used as a pilot case for similar projects in the region.
